Tools/Products:

  • A solid timber dresser, tallboy or other furniture piece.
  • Sandpaper / Electric Sander
  • Mezzie + Frank Chalk Effects Paint Akrubra
  • Paintbrush
  • Stencil
  • Stipple Brush/Stencil Brush
  • Mezzie + Frank Hardy Clear Coat
  • Optional : Gilly's Australia Restoring Polish

For this project, Kate used Mezzie + Frank Chalk Effects paint to lovingly upcycle her Nanna's dresser - a cherished family heirloom passed down through generations.

Step 1: Prep

Kate started by removing the hardware and filling any gaps or imperfections with timber filler. Once the filler had dried, the previous finish was sanded back to create a smooth surface and wiped down to eliminate all dust. Proper dust removal after sanding is essential, as it ensures a clean, smooth surface for painting, gluing, or applying any further finishes.

Step 2: Paint wash

Using Mezzie + Frank Chalk Effects Paint in the shade Akubra, Kate created a light paint wash to soften the timber’s natural oak tone. To create a paint wash: mix 1 tablespoon of paint with 1 cup of water to achieve the desired translucent effect. After brushing on the wash, it was immediately wiped it back, allowing just a hint of colour to remain and subtly lighten the timber.

Step 3: Stencil with paint

Once the paint wash had fully dried, Kate began the stencilling process. Painter's tape was used to block out any parts of the stencil that wouldn't be used. To apply the design, a stipple brush was used to dab Mezzie + Frank Chalk Effects Paint in Akubra over the stencil, creating a crisp, textured effect. While Kate opted for the stippling method, other stencilling techniques include rolling paint over the stencil with a small roller, brushing it on, or even using a sprayer for a more uniform finish.

Step 4: Seal

To seal the piece, Kate used Mezzie + Frank Hardy Clear Coat. As the product has a thick consistency, it was diluted with water to allow for smoother application. The sealer was then applied evenly with a paintbrush, ensuring a clean and durable finish.

With a thoughtful combination of restoration and creativity, Kate transformed her Nanna’s beloved dresser into a beautifully refreshed statement piece - full of character and charm. Whether you’re breathing new life into a treasured heirloom or simply looking to update an old piece, this step-by-step project is the perfect way to explore your creativity using Mezzie + Frank Chalk Effects Paint. Happy upcycling!
